So, you’ve decided to renovate your bathroom. Yay! You’re probably bursting with excitement and can’t wait to start the renovation process. But before you get carried away, you need to make sure the bathroom renovation fits within your budget.
Come to think of it, you haven’t really thought about a budget. How much does it even cost to renovate a bathroom in Toronto? Don’t worry, in this article, we’ll answer all these questions and more.
There are many factors that influence the cost of your bathroom renovation, such as: room size, fixtures, plumbing, electrical, countertops, and vanities. Let’s look at these factors, and a few others, in more detail below.
Room size is perhaps the greatest factor when it comes to Toronto bathroom renovation costs. A smaller bathroom requires less material and takes less time to renovate than a larger bathroom. Another factor to consider is how extravagant you want the space to be.
A small (5’x8’) sized bathroom costs, on average, $10,000 – $15,000. With $10,000 on the budget-friendly end of the spectrum and $15,000 on the high-end, leaving the cost of a standard renovation somewhere in the middle.
A medium (10’x10’) sized bathroom costs anywhere from $15,000 – $20,000. A budget-friendly renovation costs roughly $15,000 a standard renovation $17,500, and a high-end renovation $20,000.
For a large (14’x14’) sized bathroom, expect to spend a minimum of $20,000. A high-end renovation for a large bathroom can cost upwards of $30,000. It all depends on how extravagant you want your bathroom to be.
Fixtures play a large role when it comes to bathroom renovation costs in Toronto and the range in prices can be significant. Common fixtures used for renovations in bathrooms include: bathtubs, showers, showerheads, sinks, toilets, fans, light fixtures, and flooring. The costs of these items can fluctuate and are determined by personal preference. A bathtub can cost anywhere from $525 – $1,300, a shower $450 – $600, and a toilet $150-$650. It all depends on personal taste and budget. On average, expect to spend anywhere from $2,000 – $10,000 on renovation fixtures.
The average price of a Toronto bathroom demolition is 1,000 – $2,500. Prices depend on the degree of demolition required. If you are removing or creating walls, it will reflect in the price.
Many people don’t take the cost of demolition into account when creating a bathroom renovation budget. Demolition is not simply tearing down walls and ripping out flooring. Wires, pipes and drain vents run through the walls and attach to fixtures such as lights, vanities, and bathtubs, which need to be uninstalled.
Depending on how your current fixtures are installed, a licensed sub-trade professional may need to be called in, specifically if required by law.
Bathroom plumbing in Toronto costs roughly $2,500. Electrical work is priced between $2,000 and $2,500 and consists of wiring and light fixture installation.
A licensed plumber is needed to connect water pipes and install the shower, toilet, and sinks. If you’re moving the location of previous water fixtures it will increase the cost due to complexity. Wiring is done before the walls are fashioned and requires a licensed trade professional anywhere in Canada.
The cost of sub-trades is included in the overall quote when you hire a bathroom renovation contractor.
Tile is another factor when it comes to Toronto bathroom renovation prices. They are a popular bathroom choice because they last for decades and require little maintenance. Most modern bathrooms use tile for both the floor and the walls.
When it comes to tile options there are so many to choose from. Costs will vary depending on which tile material you choose but on average it will cost about $3,000 – $4,000 including the tile installation.
Ceramic tile is priced at $5 – $10 per square foot. Porcelain costs a little more at $7 – $14 per square foot, but is more durable and easier to keep clean. It also tends to be more cost-effective in the long run compared to Ceramic tiles. Marble tiles can range from $10 – $100 per square foot. If you want the marble tiles laid out in an intricate design, the cost will be closer to $100 per square foot.
Vanities and countertops are the heart of a bathroom. Not only do they help complete the look and feel of your bathroom, but they’re also the most used fixture in your home.
The options for vanities and countertops are practically limitless. You may opt to have a wood vanity custom-built, which will cost a minimum of $2,000, or you might choose a stock vanity instead for $500 – $1,500. The possibilities are endless.
For countertops, natural and engineered stone are the most common materials used, although wood countertops are rising in popularity. The price for stone countertops ranges from $50 – $200 per square foot, depending on the grade of the stone.
When it comes to wood countertops, their prices are determined by the quality of wood so anywhere from $25 – $150 per square foot. All wood countertops should be sealed well to prevent water damage.
There are many different types of faucets. There are faucets for your sink, your shower and your stand-alone bathtub and they come in a variety of styles, materials and prices. No matter what your bathroom renovation budget is, you can find the perfect faucet within your price range.
The typical price range for a bathroom sink faucet is $50 – $800. A shower faucet can be priced as low as $40 or as high as $1,800. For a stand-alone bathtub faucet, expect to spend anywhere from $300 – $1,500. Once again, the cost reflects your own personal preference.
It’s difficult to determine an overall average cost when it comes to bathroom flooring. This is due to a number of factors that influence the price, such as: the type of flooring used, the state of your sub-floor, removal of existing flooring and the size of your bathroom.
Before you install your new flooring, you will need to remove the old flooring. This costs roughly $1.50 per square foot, depending on how difficult it is to remove.
Once you remove the old flooring, you may find that your sub-flooring needs to be replaced due to water damage. This is not uncommon when it comes to Toronto bathroom renovations. If this is the case, expect to pay about $2 per square foot to replace it with standard plywood.
Next, a floor underlay will need to be installed before the new flooring can be placed. The price of underlays can cost $0.25 – $5 per square foot and are dependent on the type of flooring you choose.
Vinyl is a popular choice for bathroom flooring because it’s affordable and waterproof. It can be sold as planks, sheets or tiles and comes in a wide variety of colours. Vinyl flooring costs about $3 to $5 per square foot and an extra $2 – $2.50 per square foot to install.
Ceramic tile is a great choice when it comes to bathroom flooring and it’s the most cost affordable tile option to use in your bathroom. It costs about $3 – $5 per square foot and an extra $6 – $8 per square foot to install.
Porcelain tile is another, slightly more expensive, option for bathroom flooring. It costs about $6 – $8 per square foot and installation is the same price as ceramic tile $6 – $8.
Natural Stone, like marble, is by far the most visually pleasing flooring material. It is also the most expensive. Natural stone flooring costs a minimum of $15 per square foot and an extra $6 to $8 to install.
Installation costs are often included in the cost of materials for tiling or flooring, but general labour costs for other aspects of the renovation process are often overlooked. Don’t forget to include other renovation services, like painting and fixture installation when calculating your Toronto bathroom renovation costs.
The labour cost to paint a bathroom ranges from $200 – $500 not including the price of the paint.
When it comes to installing bathroom fixtures, labour costs will vary depending on how complex the installation is. To install a bathtub, plan to spend anywhere from $500 – $800. For a shower $500 – $600, a toilet $300 – $500 and light fixtures $200 – $300 each.
For an average-sized bathroom factor an additional $1,000 – $2,000 into your budget to cover these labour costs.
Not many people consider the cost of renovating a bathroom for a physical disability. People with limited mobility require different fixtures and additional bathroom equipment for assistance, which affects the cost to renovate a bathroom in Toronto.
The average price for a walk-in bathtub is $2,500 and the cost of a barrier-free shower ranges from $1,500 – $6,000. Additional bathroom equipment like grab bars is $80 each and non-slip flooring costs about $1,300. If you are planning to renovate your bathroom for a person with limited mobility, estimate about $1,500 – $9,000 to make it accessible.
